It was September 2005. I just entered Grade Seven. As a shy boy, I chose to be all alone reading books during the break while most of my classmates were expecting to make new friends. And I was doing well until the third lesson on the first day.
A teacher had us fill out a questionnaire with “get to know you” questions. I thought she would read them privately, so I felt safe to share who I was. However, after the teacher collected the papers, she mixed them up and gave them out again to the class. One by one, we read out the student’s name and then our two favorite answers. My paper went to a mean kid. His “favorite answers” of mine were the two worst ones to be read out loud.
The first question was “What’s your favorite movie?”. While other kids wrote the latest popular films, my answer was “The Wizard if Oz(《绿野仙踪》)”. It was a film made in 1939. The next question was “Where would you like to travel?”. The others said “Australia” or “Japan”. I wrote, “Wherever a good book takes me.” A loud laugh broke out immediately.
My face burned. I looked at my schoolbag. How I wished I could disappear inside it.①
But then, something amazing happened. A voice from the back of the room said, “Guys, cut it out!” It was Michael Siever, a popular boy. The room went silent. Michael then turned to the teacher and said, “Why are you letting this happen? What is the point if we are making fun of each other?”
Fifteen years have passed since then. I don’t remember the teacher or the mean kids. But Michael and I still occasionally chat with each other on the phone. I can’t forget how I felt when he spoke up for me. Michael has not only become a friend of mine, but he is also a hero in my eyes.

If you really want to succeed in life, it is very important to be a team player. For example, in a basketball game, Michael Jordan is a great player, but he still has to work well with his team members to win a game, because every member of his team has a very important role and every member of the team is necessary to the success of the team. The idea of teamwork also works well in other parts of o
ur life. Lab work and group programs are just some of the experiences calling for good teamwork with others. In the workplace, working together is also necessary for success, because no one person can build a railroad or control an airline.
Being a team player does not mean that one person should not have any ideas of his own. He doesn’t have to agree with the other team members all the time. A good team member should not be afraid to think of new ideas even the crazy ones. He needs to stick to(坚持) his ideas and share them with the other members of the team. Those crazy
ideas may help the team reach the dreams.
All in all, we all need to work with others as team players.
