June 12, 2018 was a truly historic day, as it was the day of an unprecedented (前所未有的) international summit (会议). On this day, top leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump met in Singapore.
The summit marked the first-ever meeting between the DPRK’s top leader and a sitting US president since the Korean War.
After the summit, the two leaders signed a joint statement (联合声明). The DPRK agreed to take responsibility for denuclearization (无核化). In exchange, the US agreed to “provide security guarantees (安全保障)” to the DPRK.
“We are prepared to start a new history and we are ready to write a new chapter(篇章) between our nations,” Trump said at a news conference after the summit.
For his part, Kim said: “We had a historic meeting today and we decided to leave the past behind. The world will see a major(主要的) change.”
After the Korean War ended in 1953, the DPRK and the Republic of Korea (ROK) continued to have poor relations (关系). The US stood behind the ROK in its opposition (反对) to the DPRK.

The ROK and the US have accused (谴责) the DPRK of making nuclear attack threats(威胁,恐吓), especially after its nuclear test in 2006. The US has imposed sanctions (实施制裁) against the DPRK since 2008.
But things took a big turn in 2018 when the DPRK sent its athletes(运动员) to participate(参加) in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in the ROK in February.
Later, Kim made two trips to China, and also met with Republic of Korea President Moon J
ae-in(文在寅) twice in one month. He also extended an invitation to Trump for a meeting, which was accepted by the US president.
Now Kim and Trump have finally had their handshake. However, the world is waiting to see what happens next.
