The mail carriers of the 17th century used trade and shipping routes to move correspondence. Mail moved, although slowly, around the planet in the 1600s even though the first stamps would not be issued for another 200 years.
What is known today as the post office began as a simple messaging system. Royal pages
carried letters of correspondence between the English king and the royal court. In 1626, this service was extended to include the large port of Plymouth. This network soon extended to other cities. In 1635, King Charles officially extended the use of “royal mail” to the general public.
The British Royal mail was reorganized into the Postal Service in 1660. Henry Bishop was the first postmaster general and in 1661 introduced the first postmark, which came to be known as the Bishop’s Mark. This was not just a way to record the date and time of the mail. It was a way of ensuring that letter carriers were on time and letters did not go missing due to laziness.
Colonial trade and merchant ships were also used to move mail. Letters typically took months to reach their destinations. This type of mail was not a public system that anyone could use. Trade ships were privately owned by a commercial company or commissioned(使服役) by a royal order.
Although there was no public post office or mail-carrying service in the United States until 1
775, mail carriers were employed to deliver correspondence from the colonials to imperial England in the 1600s. Colonial settlers wanted to try to keep in touch with the Old Country, and it was important that economic, military and political information continue to move across the ocean.
