If you listen to American music, or watch American television, you will probably agree that the most popular subject of these forms of entertainment is love. Romantic love always finds an audience in the United States. Falling in love, solving the problems of love and achieving the happy ending of a big wedding are subjects of interest to the adult as well as the teenage public. Millions of Americans celebrate their Valentine's Day with special cards and gifts that announce their love to their mates, their friends, their co-workers and their families. As a popular saying goes" Love conquers all." Numerous columns in magazines and newspapers offer advice to the lovelorn, those with difficulties of the heart. To most Americans, romantic love is central to the happy life.
Not only do Americans believe in romantic love but they also believe that it is the best basis for marriage. Despite the high divorce rate in the Untied States, young men and women continue to marry on the basis of romantic love. They may have strong ties with parents, brothers, or sisters, but when he or she falls in love, the strongest feelings are su
pposed to be for the loved one. When they get married, they usually plan to live apart from both sets of parents and build their own independent family structure.

The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honored by their children. On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special.
The origin of Father's Day is not clear. Some say that it began with a church service in West Virginia in 1908. Others say the first Father's Day ceremony was held in Vancouver, Washington.
The president of the Chicago branch (分部) of the Lions' Club, Harry Meek, is said to have celebrated the first Father's Day with his organization in 1915, and the day that they chose was the third Sunday in June, the closest date to Meek's own birthday!
Regardless of when the first true Father's Day occurred, the strongest promoter of the holiday was Mrs. Bruce John Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Mrs. Dodd felt that she had an outstanding father. He was a veteran of the Civil War. His wife had died young, and he had raised six children without their mother.
When children can't visit their fathers or take them out to dinner, they send a greeting card. Traditionally, fathers prefer greeting cards that are not too sentimental. Most greeting cards are whimsical so fathers laugh when they open them. Some give heartfelt thanks for the father's being there whenever the child needed Dad.
